Bessus

Bessus (zemřel 329 př. n. l.), také známý jako Artaxerxes V, was Shah of the Persian Empire from 330 to 329 BC, succeeding Darius III and preceding Alexander the Great. Byl posledním Persian shahanshah, sesadil a zavraždil svého předchůdce podle Battle of Gaugamela, jen aby Alexandr rozdrtil jeho Bactrian rump state and execute him for regicide.

Životopis

Bessus then assumed the regnal name "Artaxerxes V" and claimed to be the new Shahanshah of Persia, but most of Persia had already been conquered, and he only ruled over the Central Asian provinces not yet in Alexander's hands. In 329 BC, Alexander entered Bactria to crush Persian resistance there, and Bessus fled across the River Oxus; however, his Bactrian levies deserted rather than abandoned their homeland. He was then captured by Ptolemaios and turned to Alexander, who had him whipped and taken to Hamadan for trial and punishment.
