Giuseppe Saragat

Giuseppe Saragat (19. září 1898 – 11. června 1988) byl prezidentem Itálie od 29. prosince 1964 do 29. prosince 1971, nástupcem Antonio Segni a předchůdcem Giovanni Leone. Byl členem Italská demokratická socialistická strana.

Biography

Giuseppe Saragat se narodil v Turíně, Piedmont, Itálie v roce 1898, a vstoupil do Jednotná socialistická strana v roce 1922. He moved to Vienna, Austria in 1926 and to France in 1929, joining the underground Italian Socialist_Party the year later. In 1947, he left the PSI from concern towards its alliance with the Italian Communist Party, as he was a reformist democratic socialist; he founded the Italian Democratic Socialist Party. He served as President of the Constituent Assembly of Italy from 1945 to 1946, as Foreign Minister from 1963 to 1964 and as President of Italy from 1964 to 1971. Jeho prezidentství bylo vzácným příkladem jednoty italské levice a sedm let působil jako prezident. Zemřel v roce 1988.
