Andrew Jackson Smith

Andrew Jackson Smith (28. dubna 1815 – 30. ledna 1897) byl generálmajor během Union Army generálmajor během American Civil War.

Biography

Andrew Jackson Smith se narodil v Bucks County, Pennsylvania v roce 1815 a absolvoval West Point v roce 1838 a sloužil v US Army in the American Southwest, the Mexican-American War, and in the href="/wiki/Native_American" class="mw-redirect" title="Native American">Indian wars in Washington and Oregon. V roce 1862 byl povýšen na brigádního generála a velitele kavalerie na ministerstvu Missouri a při zařazení do Army of the Tennessee, dobyl Arkansas Post a velel divizi u Siege of Vicksburg. V roce 1864 vedl jednu ze tří armád Union armies during the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. Ve dnech 14. – 15. července 1864 porazil Stephen D. Lee's Confederate army in Battle of Tupelo in Mississippi, a vyznamenal se u Battle of Nashville in December and in the capture of Mobile, Alabama in 1865. Po válce sloužil jako plukovník kavalerie u American West, a v roce 1869 odešel do důchodu, aby se stal poštmistrem St. Louis, Missouri, kde zemřel v roce 1897.
